Baseline Testing

At Horizon Neuropsychological Services, we believe concussion care should start before an injury happens. That’s where baseline testing comes in. It provides us with a clear picture of how an athlete’s brain functions when they’re healthy, so if they ever sustain a concussion, we have something to compare it to. This helps guide their recovery and ensures they’re truly ready to return to play/ activities.

What is baseline testing, and why is it important?

Baseline testing consists of several brief tasks that measure key brain functions when an athlete is healthy, such as before a sport season. These domains include, but are not limited to, memory, attention span, reaction time, and processing speed. During testing, a profile is established that can be referenced in the event of a head injury. By comparing pre-injury data to post-injury results, medical professionals can identify specific changes in brain function and tailor a person’s treatment plan to their specific needs.

Group baseline testing for teams, schools, and clubs

We offer on-site baseline testing for athletic teams, schools, and community sports programs. Whether you’re a coach, athletic trainer, or parent, we make the process easy to schedule and tailored to your group’s needs. Call us at 720-242-7533 to schedule your team, ideally before the start of a sport season.

In-office testing available

We also provide individual baseline testing in our clinic for athletes who prefer a one-on-one setting, or if you are not able to participate in baseline testing with a larger group. This is an excellent option for families who want to take extra steps to protect their child’s health.

How often should I get a baseline test?

It is recommended to repeat baseline concussion tests every two years.

Baseline testing isn’t just for athletes

While baseline concussion testing is commonly done with athletes, it’s important to recognize that concussions can happen to anyone, regardless of age, profession, or lifestyle. Everyday activities, accidents, or unforeseen events such as falls, car collisions, or recreational mishaps can pose a risk of head injury. Having a baseline profile of your brain’s functions can be invaluable in these situations, providing medical professionals with critical data to ensure a more specific and effective treatment plan.

At Horizon Neuropsychological Services, we encourage individuals from all walks of life to consider baseline testing as a proactive measure for their health and wellbeing. Whether you’re a busy professional, an active retiree, or an athlete, being prepared can make a difference in your recovery journey should a concussion occur. Schedule yourself, your athlete, or your team today by calling us at 720-242-7533.
